Lots of Tauregs fled to the cities. They often lost their identity, lived marginalized and since they were considered 'untouchable', they suffered  economical and social discrimination.


Some of them fled to Algeria and Libya to enroll in the Islamic armies, but often experienced the same discrimination, or were sometimes just expelled.

During the 1980's the governments of Niger and Mali proposed the resettlement of Tuaregs returning from Algeria and Libya. But this proposal never materialized and the Tuaregs met with increasing hostility all over the region.
Their situation worsened.
